Before you purchase your hearing instrument, you can either get an exam and referral from your general physician or go directly to a hearing care professional for a hearing evaluation. The hearing care professional will work with you to determine whether you have a hearing loss, and will help you find the best way to improve your hearing.

Who Treats Hearing Loss?

Audiologists specialise in evaluating and treating people who suffer from hearing loss and balance problems. Audiologists provide assessments and hearing care to people of all ages, from infants to adults. They also provide services to assist in the prevention of hearing loss and tinnitus management strategies. Audiologists are required to hold a Bachelor's Degree, and a two-year Master's Degree in Audiology as well as completing the ASA's 12-month clinical internship program to be awarded the Certificate of Clinical Practice (CCP).

Audiometrists are professionals in the area of hearing assessment and rehabilitation. Their daily activities may include but are not restricted to basic site of lesion assessment, testing, needs evaluation and counselling, device prescription, device fitting, adjustment and aural rehabilitation. Audiometrists are required to have attained a Diploma of Hearing Device Prescription and Evaluation.

Otolaryngologists or Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeons are trained in the management and treatment of patients with diseases and disorders of the ear, nose and throat (ENT), and related structures of the head and neck. Commonly referred to as an ENT surgeon, areas of specialty include diagnosis and management of hearing difficulties and deafness, nasal and sinus conditions, snoring and breathing problems, voice problems, tumours of the head, neck and ears, and plastic surgery of the nose and face. Otolaryngologists are required to complete up to 15 years of college and post-graduate training before going into practice.

Speech Pathologist are specialists trained to assess and treat people of all ages who have a communication or swallowing disorder. Speech pathologists complete a degree at university, which encompasses all aspects of communication including speech, writing, reading, signs, symbols and gestures.
