Most frequent causes of hearing loss

If you have hearing loss, do you know what caused it? There are many causes of hearing loss. Some are unexpected and rare — like diabetes, sleep apnoea and measles. And some, when you think about it, make more sense — like a perforated eardrum or earwax buildup.

The two most common causes, however, are exposure to loud noises (either steadily over time or via a sudden, extremely high-decibel sound) and simply growing older. They make sense, too, though, when you think about it.

If you do have hearing loss, it’s helpful to know what caused it — because then you can figure out the best way to treat it. A consultation with a hearing healthcare professional can help you determine both.
