Q: What should I do if my hearing aids don’t seem to be working?
A: There are a few things you should try prior to calling your hearing professional for an appointment.
First, check and change the battery. Sometimes batteries can be faulty, so if one hearing aid works with a fresh battery but another doesn’t, consider trying a different battery in that device.
Second, check the microphones and the receiver tube — the part that enters your ear canal — for blockage. If you see any debris, use the cleaning brush that came with your hearing aid to remove the debris and clear the pathway. When a tube or microphone is blocked, sound can’t travel through the tubing into your ear canal.
Third, try resetting the hearing aids and any accompanying devices. For example, with Halo or Halo 2 hearing aids, you may experience a connection issue. Try opening the battery doors on your hearing aids to turn them off. Restart your smartphone or tablet device. Close the battery doors to turn the hearing aids back on and see if they will resync with your phone or tablet.
